as he set to this task, shadow phoenix made himself useful by electing himself the official lawnmower. the black stallion set to grazing, his white tail swishing carelessly from side to side. he was in a good mood that day because ayumu had gotten up without much fuss. there was a small part of the intelligent animal that hoped it was a sign of improvement, but he knew better than to let that get too bright.
once ayumu refreshed his mind for the day, he closed the precious notebook that contained the scribbles of his life's work to its place in the saddlebag, and rose to his feet. this place was ripe with greenery, as was most of nippon, and so he knew he had his work cut out for him if he wanted to cover a lot of ground before noon. he started by heading over to the edge of the nearest pool, shadow phoenix lifting his head to watch for a moment before returning to the grass he was eating with disinterest. ayumu knelt down beside the water, and started looking for herbs and plants species he hadn't logged yet in his notebook.

Leaving the safety of the Dragon Palace and going somewhere quite the distance away from the sea may not be the best idea in the world. It was also very rare to see one of her kind away from the deep sea they called home, and it was frowned upon by many of her kind. After all, you never know what the people of the land might do to the people of the sea. There have been many stories she has heard over the years--Dragonians killed for their scales and fins, some people even believing that having something of a Dragonian in their possession gave them the power to breath underwater. Of course, those were just stories. That never meant that they were true. For all she knew, those from the land could be gentle creatures. Green eyes slowly blinked, watching as the water rippled with a fish being plucked out of the pond by a bird. Really, the only threat she found so far were the birds and fishermen. Also the cats, but she had yet to see any who really cared enough to stop licking themselves or sleeping. From her spot in the depths of the pond, the 'carrot' colored Dragonian observed the fish and anything that could be seen reflecting from the pond's surface. Fresh water fish were much different than salt water fish, so her eyes would widen with amazement when she saw a new type of fish. With a small smile, the girl flicked her tail, pulling her forward a few yards so she could observe a large catfish lazily exiting from his hiding place. Lucia reached out, allowing her fingers to slid over the dark grey scales. Fresh water fish also felt smoother than the salt water fish, though that might just be because there wasn't any salt to make it feel rough. Green eyes flicked to the surface, blinking a few times as the distorted figure of what looked like a human could be seen. Fisherman? No, he wasn't carrying those dreaded poles with string attached to them. Allowing curiosity to get the best of her, the Dragonian slowly let herself raise to the surface. The water made a soft sound as her head broke through, but nothing more happened. She really did not want to disturb the human, so she went to observing from afar, emerald eyes locked on what the man was doing. TAGS ayumu! MUSE bleh... WORDS fourohthree NOTES i'minvading! ayumu continued to look for plants that were unfamiliar, this time trying to find something along the water's edge instead of having to disturb the wildlife in the pond to examine one. it was around that time that he thought he spotted a flash of orange beneath the surface, but when he looked he saw nothing, and shrugged it off. he could clearly see that fish inhabited this pond by the plenty, and so paid no more mind to it than that.
he was investigating a new kind of fern on the water's edge when he heard it. it almost sounded like a fish surfacing, so ayumu let the sound fall into the dark recesses of his mind, where the cobwebs collected in drones. but, his warrior instincts made him more focused to his surroundings, or at least he was more alert now. just in case someone tried to sneak up on him in an ambush, he'd be ready. even though he didn't really look it. he didn't react to the sound really, and just remained immersed in what he was doing.
it was actually shadow phoenix who caught his attention next....
from the corners of his vision, he watched the stallion lift his head, ears erect and alert, and approach the pond where ayumu was. ayumu was almost expecting the stallion to headbutt him into the water, but that wasn't the case. he walked up behind ayumu, and the man heard his horse snort softly on the surface of the water. something had the animal's undivided attention, but caution forced ayumu to stay his eyes. he didn't know what it was. if only he had looked up, he would see that his animal companion was stretching his neck out towards a strange girl in the pond....

The land people were much different than she had thought of. The stories she had heard, mainly from her elder brother to keep her from visiting the surface too much, made her think that they were large, greedy beasts with talons, fangs, and horns. But, no. This land dweller looked much like the land form of a Dragonian. Lucia blinked a few times as the sound of moving grass made her glance over at the large animal behind the man. Wait, is that a... Horse? Why, yes, it is! Man, they look a lot different--and larger--than the seahorses... The ones of the sea were really small, yet adorable. Do male land horses give birth like seahorses? She didn't know, and she really didn't want to see it happen, either.
The green haired girl, tilted her head to the side a little while continuing to observe the horse. The man wasn't paying any attention to the hard-to-miss girl in the pond, so she had quickly lost interest in him. The horse, however, had many questions running through her mind. Why were they so huge? Could you ride them? Oh, is that fur on their bodies instead of scales? There were just too many questions! Too bad the horse wasn't a seahorse. Otherwise, she could just speak to the animal and have her questions answered. Turning into an Angel Fish had its advantages.
Lucia let her gaze switch to the man once more. He seemed to be too busy doing... Whatever it he is doing to even care to spare her a glance. Oh well, at least the horse knew when to acknowledge a lady! Pfft, it's not like she wasn't use to being ignored, seeing how she was an orphan. But, it was still quite rude! With a swift movement, the carrot colored Dragonian dived back into the depths of the pond, her tail fin slapping the water hard enough to send a large spray of water flying towards the horse and man. Well, she was aiming at the man, but she wouldn't be surprised if the horse got sprayed as well.
She let out a soft giggle, the sound inaudible to those above the water's surface. She turned around, allowing herself to face the water's surface once more. Now all she had to do was wait for the man to react, and she would have some entertainment. Wait, wasn't she suppose to be the entertainer? Oh well, it doesn't matter until she goes back to Dragon Palace.

after all, how was it that you couldn't noticed something that got you wet? he was relieved the notebook was behind him, as it was shielded, but he looked down at his wet and now cold clothes and then back up at shadow phoenix, who seemed to be glaring at him like this was somehow his fault. "hey, don't look at me like that." he snapped, giving the horse a suspicious stare. but it was only to tease the animal as they normally did to each other.
shadow started pawing the ground with the hoof nearest the pond, and that made ayumu look at him like he was crazy. but he knew what the horse was trying to communicate, because he was a smart man. he knew that the water could only have come from the pond because of how he was splashed at the angle. but he thought it was a fish. a big fish, and a mischievous one, but nonetheless. a fish. nothing in the world could have prepared him for what he saw when he peered into the pond.
at first, all he saw was the orange again, and he almost looked away after having seen that. but this time, he registered something else. green...hair...? his eyes took everything in slowly, quite possibly a reaction of disbelief. and the look on his face was so stunned by what he saw, that it didn't change at first. "hey...shadow...there's a...girl...in the water.... and she has a fin...." shadow phoenix only snorted at ayumu before lifting his head, as if he was rolling his eyes at the man.
ayumu had heard legends of these people from the nippon natives, but never in a million lifetimes would he have suspected he would witness this. after the awe, a brief moment of panic swept over him. did this creature want to fight? but then, his brain registered that the face this dragonian had was that of a child, and he wasn't afraid of that any longer. he tilted his head to the side slightly, his gaze more curious now than anything. he wondered if they could communicate with humans....
the researcher within him started to take over, as the warrior ayumu took a backseat. he wondered how he could communicate to her that he wasn't interested in hurting her, and decided to get a closer look first. ayumu promptly removed his shoes and the top layers of his clothes, setting them far enough aside so that they wouldn't get wet -- or rather, wetter in the case of his clothes -- before gently and tentative getting into the water. he figured he could swim well enough and hold breath for long enough to accomplish what he wanted to accomplish.
once he was standing in the pond, ignoring that the stallion snorted at him before turning his back on the man, basically calling him stupid he was certain, ayumu walked into the deeper water. he treaded for a moment before taking in a deep breath and letting his body sink to the level the dragonian was at. he kept himself there, but far enough away in distance so that she wouldn't feel threatened, hopefully.
the warrior in him knew she had a certain advantage against him now.
but ayumu didn't think she looked like the violent type. the innocent curiosity in his gaze was more intense now that he was so close, and he tempted to reach out and touch her. but he didn't. water creature or not, she was still a girl. touching her without her expressed permission would just be plain rude. but he did bring a small and friendly smile to his face, an attempt to show that he was no threat to her. the last thing he wanted to do was scare her away with his stupidity.

Their expressions were pretty much like that of the Dragonians, though it seems as though their curiosity was far greater than that of her kind. If her brother was still alive, her would have scolded her from going anywhere near a human, let alone a man, of all genders. She had been told that human men were greedy and selfish, them being the 'monsters' in the stories told to young Dragonians at night.
Green eyes watched with curiosity as the human took off some of what he was wearing and entered the pond. She should be frightened off, but her Entertainer side told her not to. Why not give him a show? After all, it was what she did best. With a soft giggle, the carrot colored mermaid circled around the water, causing some of the multicolored fish to scatter. She then spiraled upwards, leaving a trail of bubbles behind her, flipping backwards near the surface, and diving back down, only to circle around the man. Lucia slowed down and stopped in front of the man, making sure to keep at least an arm's length distance between them for boundaries sake.
She tilted her head to the side, allowing her gaze to study the man. Wait... Why wasn't his chest taking in the water to breath? Her own chest was rising and falling as though she were taking in normal breaths of air. Emerald eyes narrowed slightly in confusion. The girl opened her mouth, allowing her voice to travel through the water with the clarity as though she were speaking on land instead. "Why do you humans hold your breath?" Her head tilted slightly more to the side as she spoke. "Are you not able to use the oxygen trapped in the water?"
The green haired Dragonian flicked her tail fin back and forth idly, awaiting an answer. Oh, what if the humans couldn't speak underwater? Wait, would that mean... Oh, dear! He might need the normal air! She did remember her brother saying something on how Dragonians and fish were the only beings able to breath under water...

she stopped about an arm's length away from him, tempting him once again to reach out and touch her, but he restrained himself. he had lasted this long, making a move would surely only ruin this rare moment. "why do you humans hold your breath?" she was...talking? she could talk underwater? he wondered if that was a trait of the species, or something unique only to her. though he doubted it was the latter. however, he was now confronted with a dilemma. she had asked him a question, but he couldn't answer her. unlike her, he couldn't speak under water. and now, enough time had ticked by that he needed to start exhaling the breath he took. he did so slowly, making sure he would last as long as possible. lucky for him, the dilemma didn't last very long.
"are you not able to use the oxygen trapped in the water?"
now that, because it was a yes or no question, could be answered. or at least responded to. he slowly shook his head, tilting it slightly to the side in curiosity. now he had an answer to his previous pondering, and he was right. it wasn't the latter, by the way she had stated the question, it seemed like all dragonians had the ability to breath underwater, and she had even been kind enough to provide a how. still, that didn't make it any less interesting. even if it did make sense and he was scolding himself mentally for being so stupid. how could they live underwater as they did if they couldn't breath and converse underwater as well? if they couldn't it wasn't really living. unless they had a sign language, which clearly not all of them needed.
however, he had now run out of time.
damn it! he cursed mentally. he would need to surface now, and he had no way of knowing if this dragonian girl was going to follow. up there, at least he could answer her questions verbally, and she his. ayumu started swimming for the surface, realizing how impeccable his timing was when he broke the surface, his lungs burning from the effort and strain he had just put on them. now, he was treading again, his body moving gently so as to not startle any fish. or, more importantly, the dragonian girl. his pure cyan eyes started looking around for her, looking to see if she came up to the surface of the pond with him. ignoring the look he was getting from shadow phoenix all the while, though he could feel the animal's dark brown gaze burning through his now drenched clothes. ayumu knew what the stallion was most likely thinking: 'damn, my master is insane.' hell, he was probably wondering if all humans were like him. not that ayumu cared at the moment.
he was too busy looking for the girl.

Of course they couldn't speak underwater! Oh, how stupid was she. If she had some more schooling, she would know these things! Lucia blinked, her mind registering that the human was making a race for the surface. Was he leaving her already? That's no fun at all! Wait, wait, wait. Maybe he was getting some air? Oh, right. He couldn't breathe underwater. Jeez, she was forgetting things already!
The green haired girl kicked the water with her tail, slowly making her way up to the surface. She decided to go slow so the human could regain his breath. Once she, herself, was at the water's surface, she allowed her own lungs to quickly get use to the difference between the oxygen levels. Her eyes locked on the man, a large smile on her face. "You can speak now, yes?" Another stupid question, but she just had to be sure!
Lucia circled around the man once more, glancing back at the horse, before giggling. "You humans and your horses sure look weird." She halted her circling and hummed before speaking up once more. "I'm Lucia! You?"

[/b] aha! ayumu turned quickly to the sound of someone breaking past the surface, meeting her gaze quickly. he nodded in response to her question, a bit surprised at her lack of her knowledge in the human race as well as in her ability to breath and speak both underwater and above the surface. "yes, i can." he responded, adjusting his movements so that he could last longer treading water, since he didn't know if she would spook or just leave if he turned his back for a moment to return to land. his arms and legs were beginning to ache, but he figured he could deal with it. after all, he was a warrior as well as a doctor. well...not yet technically, but still! he was convinced he could last. "You humans and your horses sure look weird."ayumu blinked at that statement, a bit taken off guard. still, she was such a cute child that he couldn't help a soft chuckle in amusement. even it was...technically kind of an insult. "well, to us humans, you look a bit strange as well." he countered, raising a brow as he spoke. it was a fair point he thought, and was curious as to what her reaction would be. so far, she hadn't done or said anything to press his buttons. she was, after all, a child. and a female child at that. and right now, ayumu was exorcising his patience. however, it was really only a matter of time until his sarcastic, grumpy side came out to play. especially if she continued circling him like that. "i'm lucia! you?"[/b] ah, finally, she stopped her circling. now ayumu wouldn't have to keep turning to keep his gaze locked with her's, to make sure she didn't just up and vanish on him. it was beginning to make a bit dizzy. "ayumu." he said, placing a hand to chest and dipping a bit, but not so much that his nose touched the water. just the tips of his bangs. he straightened out again and put his arm back to work on keeping him afloat, relieved to see she had left when he had looked away so briefly. "you are...a dragonian, yes?" a fair question, but a bit of a lame and stupid one. if she wasn't a dragonian, then she was either a figment of his imagination, or some demon child. and neither one of those options seemed very true, so he remained hopefully she would confirm his deductions.
